NEW YORK TO HOST SECOND ANNUAL PARADE IN UNITED STATES TO CELEBRATE DANCING
Dance Police to issue citations; Celebrities on floats; Festival to follow parade
September 19, 2007, New York, NY - On Saturday May 17 2008 thousands will gather on 32nd Street to salsa, hustle, swing, tango, break and boogie down Broadway and Fifth Avenue in the second annual dance parade to celebrate all forms of dance. DJs, live bands and vibrant dancers will board colorful floats to exhibit over 40 genres of dance. Ending in Washington Square Park, dancers will celebrate the city’s history and diversity of dance on four stages featuring various styles.
Liat Tamam, Communications Director, “Broadway is the place where legends are made and the world comes to see the stars.” Celebrities certainly won’t be in short supply with local New York favorite, DJ Danny Tenaglia on his “Be Yourself” float, the founder of hip-hop, DJ Kool Herc, the pioneers of breakdance Keith and Kevin Smith, John “Jellybean” Benitez, Victor Simonelli, and the Melting Pot NYC .
New York City will celebrate the many dance genres it has created as well as scores of others from world cultures including African, Ballroom, Contra, Irish Step, Roller Disco, Swing, Salsa and Zydeco. “In showcasing so many styles of dance, we look to celebrate the city’s rich diversity as “One Parade with Many Cultures,” says Greg Miller, Director of the parade.
The Dance Police Brigade will ticket bystanders not found dancing with “Discount Coupons” to city nightclubs and dance schools. “We will issue citations at every corner,” says Brigade Sergeant Judy Atrubin, “so that more people can learn about the fun and health benefits of dancing!”
To date, over six thousand dancers are registered in the free event from 126 dance organizations including; Dance Manhattan, Sandra Cameron Dance Center, Djoniba Dance Center, Soho Dance, and Stepping Out Studios.
Schedule:
* 10am: Float/Vehicle Lineup on 32nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues
* 12pm: Press Conference at 32nd and Broadway
* 1pm: Opening ceremony and welcome addresses
* 2-4pm: Parade proceeds down Broadway to Union Square, joining Fifth Avenue from 13th Street. A review stand will receive dancers in front of Washington Square Memorial Arch.
* 4-8pm: Dance performances on three stages in the Park. History of dance show on main stage
